“Cathedral Moon” – Channel-framed – Marco Island Organic Series

CATHEDRAL MOON – by Dr. DJ – at 18.5″ x 63″ – is the largest painting in the Marco Island Organic Series. The size includes the frame which is part of the art. The size also explains why it does not fit in our imposed frame here. We would have had to make it so small that you could not see the details. MIO pieces all share the same canvas that was repeatedly immersed in the Gulf of Mexico with painting in between, as well as sand and beach detritus rubbed into the canvas. The large canvas was, while wet, rolled up, sealed in plastic overnight, then stretched, dried, and cut into various sized pieces.

All pieces in the MIO Series originated from one piece of canvas which is why they are all suspended in space showing no edge – as if forever seeking to reunite. After pieces are stiffened they are mounted on an island in a 1.5″ “tray frame” – which is substantial in weight (a 5/8″ base of wood) to prevent warpage. They are coated in several layers of varnish.

Viewers are encouraged to feel the painting, for a new dimensional experience. [When is the last time someone asked you to touch the surfaces of their painting?] One can feel the sand and other beach items beneath the varnish and paint, which adds to the notion that by owning a piece in the MIO Series, one also owns actual beachfront property along with a piece of extraordinary art.
